Can be served hot or cold, as is, sandwiched, or spread on flat bread.

*Can be roasted the day before final cooking.

credit: University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics

Cinnamon

I successfully have identified something on the no-no list that I CAN tolerate:
Cinnamon!

I'm really into cinnamon rolls lately, so that's a good thing ;)

Is there anything you have identified that you can eat that you're not supposed to be able to?

Mini pizza's!

<img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; Besides the fact that sugar could just be used in products instead, as much as 2/3 of the population (including myself) suffer from Dietary Fructose Intolerance. HFCS is in everything and for those who do not know they have DFI, it causes many problems. Remember when Gluten intolerance wasn't a big deal? Now it's being taken out of many things. Uping the shelf life of a product helps them out. For beverage makers, it is optimal to use HFCS because it's very soluble, more so than regular sugar.

Recommending a Blog

Here is a link to a blog about High-Fructose Corn Syrup. I could continue to update it though because sometimes people grow out of in tolerances and allergies.
I hope I grow out of mine.

Article with useful information

Old but informative article on FM/DFI from U of I.

This paragraph sums up FM/DFI for me:

The problem, aside from added carbohydrates to the diet, is that there is no enzyme in the gut to digest fructose. It requires the presence of an equal amount of another sugar, glucose, to be appropriately absorbed into the small intestine. Going out to eat with food allergies or intolerances can be difficult, but I've read some helpful information, like in my book, Living with Dietary Fructose Intolerance and on this website.
I had been out to restaurants a few times and found things I could eat.
Unfortunately, this time I could not resist the temptation of the chicken strips.
Processed food and commercially breaded food is not friendly to our intestines, which I knew, but they just sounded so good! So I gave in.
And then about an hour later I gave in to the nausea.

Great post

Check out this post here.

Interesting experience with FM/DFI. Also, health food sections and stores would be a good place to look and they also offer gluten-free items, if you're also sensitive to that.

Do you guys know any other brands?

Inability to digest sugars and depression linked?!

An article I've come across explaining a new study linking depression and the inability to digest sugars correctly. THIS MEANS FRUCTOSE!
This is scary and really unfortunate. Depression is not something to mess around with. If you're feeling depressed, suicidal or the urge to hurt yourself, get help. Therapy is great but if you feel that you can't stop yourself from doing real damage, seek emergency help. As a victim of depression myself, I know how tolling it is on your body, soul and your life. This is really disappointing. My 'tummy issues' (stomach pain, gas, diarrhea) had gotten a little better -- no diarrhea. When I saw my nutritionist, she said that little bits of things should be fine in my diet. The other day my mom put a little bit of ketchup into our casserole.
I got sick.
Just a tiny bit of ketchup affected me.
That's how cruel this illness can be. Favorite dishes are out of the question, dishes with traces of fructose cause reactions. This is an example of finding what works for you. Obviously ketchup doesn't work for me, even though the nutritionist thought that it would. Maybe it will be fine for you.
Maybe someday I'll be able to work myself up to being able to have a bit of ketchup, but right now I know I'll definitely be steering clear of it.

The Value of Seeing a Nutritionist

In my last post I mentioned seeing a nutritionist. It wasn't my or my family's idea, it was something my gastroenterologist expected me to do. But you might be wondering: is it worth it?
I think yes. The nutritionist will know more about your disease, really. They will be able to give you more guidance and more updated information. They can help you figure out what foods work for you.
When I was diagnosed, the nurse just called us and told us to stay away from high fructose corn syrup. WHICH IS COMPLETELY WRONG. So, I suffered for two more months until I went back to the gastroenterologist who gave me a huge list of foods to not eat. It was daunting. In a few days, I saw the nutritionist. She told me about a reasonable plan:
1. Elimination Diet-Very low fructose ingestion
2. Reintroduction-Put back foods into your diet to see your reaction
3. Management-Living with FM/DFI
I am still on the elimination diet for about 3 more weeks. It's not fun, but it has begun to get my stomach back on track. After the time is up and I'm feeling better, we will add foods back in my diet to find out how I react to them. Once I know what foods I react to, I will manage my diet and my lifestyle.
Seeing a nutritionist gives you personalization and guidance. If your insurance will cover it (some won't) or you can afford it, I would recommend getting an appointment.

Food Do's and Don'ts

Since this diagnosis is fairly new to the medical community, research and information can be contradictory. I got two different packets of what to eat and what not to eat from my gastroenterologist and my nutritionist. The nutritionist's plan was much more lax. According to a book I bought on Amazon, Living with Dietary Fructose Intolerance by Judy Smith, everyone reacts differently to different foods. Smith appeared to be really sensitive, but other FM/DFI patients weren't as sensitive.
Anyway, I have a list here that combines all the information I have. Keep in mind that some foods may cause you a reaction and others may not. Also, it's important to read labels because unsafe foods may be in some otherwise 'clean' food.

Definite No-no's:
Anything with tomato
Red peppers
Onions
ANYTHING WITH HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP
Plum
Cantaloupe
Orange
Kiwi
Grapes/Raisins
Honeydew
Watermelon
Bananas
Blueberries
Pears
Prunes
Maple syrup
Malasses
SORBITOL
Brown Sugar
Caramel
Fructose (obviously ;))
Honey
Karo Corn syrup
Garlic
To try (monitor your reaction):
Other fruits and vegetables
Splenda
Lactose
Sucrose
Gluten (limit)
Cereals (with no HFCS)
Processed food
Tofu
Dairy
Nuts
Condiments, dressings (with no HFCS)
Soda (diet should be fine)

Suggestions to eat:
Eggs
Baby carrots
Plain or vanilla yogurt
Avocados
Lemons
Limes
Pasta
Rice
Peanut Butter
Potatos
Salad
Tortillas
Non-sugar cured meats

I hope this helps!
